What is pairPaint?
pairPaint is a free online paint app and collaborative whiteboard that runs entirely in your web browser. You open the page and you are drawing — no account, no download, no install screen, no waiting. It behaves the same on a school Chromebook, an iPad, a Windows PC or a phone.
The idea is simple: keep what made the classic paint programs great — big friendly tools, instant drawing, nothing to learn — and add everything the modern web can do now: dozens of artistic brushes, printable paper, one-click export, and rooms where friends, classmates or family can draw on the same canvas at the same time. Think of it as MS Paint's friendly great-grandchild: the same zero learning curve, but it travels and it shares.
What can you do in pairPaint?
- Draw & paint — a pencil, highlighter and eraser sit next to 24 brush styles: round, marker, calligraphy, spray, crayon, neon, chalk, airbrush, fur, sparkles and more, with full size and opacity control.
- Shapes, lines & arrows — 18 vector shapes (circle, rectangle, triangle, star, heart…) with your own fill, outline and pattern, plus lines and arrows with adjustable thickness.
- Stickers, coloring & text — hundreds of stickers, coloring outlines for younger kids and emojis, plus captions in five fun fonts.
- Paper & printing — plain, ruled, graph, dot or numbered paper in any color, an A4 portrait or landscape border, and printing that matches exactly what you see.
- Save & export — the canvas autosaves in your browser, and you can export a PNG picture, copy any area as an image, or download every page as one PDF document.
- Unlimited history — undo and redo as much as you like. Nothing can break and nothing is lost by accident.
How does drawing together work?
Press the people icon in the toolbar, type your name and press Create room. pairPaint hands you a 5-letter room code — read it out loud, drop it in your class chat, or write it on the board. Anyone who opens pairPaint on any device can press Join room, type the code and start drawing. No accounts, no installs, no seats to purchase.
Open mode puts everyone on one shared canvas, perfect for a class mural or a group doodle. Creator mode gives every student their own canvas while the teacher watches live thumbnails update in real time, can sketch feedback straight onto a student's work, pause anyone who needs to listen, hand out the same starting frame with Send my canvas to all, and collect the whole class's work as one PDF at the end of the lesson.
Rooms stay private: only people with your code — plus your password, if you set one — can get in, and your artwork stays on your device unless you join a room or export it.
Why is there no good online paint and whiteboard app?
Before building pairPaint we went looking for exactly the app this post describes: a clean, free, kids-friendly paint and whiteboard app the whole class could open in a browser. We closed a lot of tabs. Not because our search was bad — because the good options genuinely seemed to be missing. Here is what we kept running into.
1. Ad-heavy sites that feel unsafe for kids
Plenty of free paint tools exist, but many are a thin wrapper around an ad network: banners wrapped around the toolbar, pop-ups that look like close buttons, interstitials before you can draw. They may be technically free, but they do not feel safe next to a seven-year-old — and teachers will not put a screen full of ads on the classroom projector.
2. Sign-up walls, downloads and locked tools
The most common frustration: you draw three strokes, then hit a wall. Create a free account to save, install an app to continue, add a browser extension, or start a "free trial" that asks for a credit card. The first ten seconds of drawing should never need a signup form.
3. The good apps are built for professionals
The polished drawing apps are genuinely excellent — for illustrators. Layer panels, brush engines, color management and subscriptions are powerful, but a kid just wants a big brush and bright colors. On top of that, "free" tiers often stop after three exports, so creativity ends up buried behind settings and upgrades.
4. Classroom whiteboards cost money
When Google retired Jamboard in 2023, teachers were left hunting for a replacement. Most collaborative whiteboards that followed are enterprise tools billed per seat, per month, tied to school accounts. A simple whiteboard for today's lesson should not need a procurement process.
5. The old paint toys never survived the Flash era
Some beloved browser paint toys are still online, but they are stuck in the past: plugins browsers no longer run, layouts built for a mouse at 1024×768, toolbars that break on a touchscreen. On a school Chromebook or an iPad — which is what most classrooms actually have — they simply do not work.
What a good kids-friendly paint app should look like
After all those dead ends, we wrote down what "good" should really mean — and built pairPaint from that list:
- Opens straight into drawing — no login, no download, no install.
- Big, clearly labeled buttons and a clean, uncluttered interface a child can read.
- Actually free — every brush and tool available, no upsell pop-ups.
- Safe for kids — no ads pretending to be buttons, no personal details collected.
- Works on a Chromebook, an iPad and a classroom touch display, with mouse or finger.
- Your drawing stays on your device unless you choose to share it.
- Real-time drawing together without seats, licences or accounts.
- Print and export that match exactly what is on the screen.
That is pairPaint: free for everyone, supported by advertising on the site rather than inside your artwork, with everything unlocked from the first tap. Twin the elephant keeps kids company, teachers get live rooms and PDF exports, and nobody ever meets a signup wall.
Who is pairPaint for?
Kids get a big-button paint box with stickers, coloring outlines and silly brushes — nothing to break, nothing to buy.
Teachers get a live classroom: create a room, watch every student canvas update, draw guidance straight onto their work, and collect everything as one PDF.
Friends and families get a shared sketchpad — open a room, share the code, and draw together from anywhere, on any device.
Frequently asked questions
Is pairPaint really free?
Yes — every brush, sticker, shape and classroom room is free, with no account and no download. pairPaint is supported by advertising on the site, with no paid tiers and nothing to buy inside the app.
Do I need an account or an app to use pairPaint?
No. pairPaint runs entirely in your browser on phones, tablets, Chromebooks and PCs. To draw together, one person creates a room and shares the 5-letter code — no sign-up needed.
